Municipal golf courses are owned by the city and usually have the most relaxed dress codes, if any at all. Generally speaking, anything goes at Muni’s. This includes your favorite athleisure wear such as yoga pants and non-collared shirts. 

Casual wear for lady golfers:

Municipal courses are generally more relaxed dress codes than private clubs. When deciding what to wear you can focus on two things, comfort and neatness. The best decision for a good in between is athleisure wear. It will offer you high-quality fabrics that are desirable for both the course and the clubhouse. When you’re with your best friends you want to feel your best, so finding that laid-back golf outfit will put you right where you want to be.

Since there is not a traditionally strict attire at Muni’s, it is now important you ask yourself if you are comfortable. Assessing comfort online can be hard, but we make it simple for you. There are certain fabrics and materials every lady golfer requires to feel maximum comfort.

• Fabric that offers freedom: Breathability in your fabric is non-negotiable. Having the right amount of airflow will keep you from overheating, and who doesn’t love lightweight material. 
• Functionality: Blends of fabric such as polyester and spandex will take away that sweat you fear on the course. Moisture-wicking material does this best, so finding golf wear that keeps you dry will make you that much more comfortable.

Golf Dress Code for Women -  Public Golf Courses 

Public Golf Courses are defined as privately owned but open to the public.  Public courses generally fall somewhere in the middle of muni’s and private clubs. Each public golf course is well within their rights to create and enforce any women’s golf dress code that they want.

To be safe, always call ahead to find out both the women’s golf clothes etiquette and the women’s golf clothes requirements. Often, there are no short shorts, denim, tanks or tees. Public courses are where it is taken a step forward from municipal, but still more lenient than private clubs. When asking yourself what to wear for public golf courses, think neat and functional. More times than not it is widely what you are expecting, so spaghetti straps, for example, are not appropriate for public courses. 

Utilizing the 3 finger rule as a women golfer:

A commonly asked question is how do you determine lengths of golf bottoms and what is acceptable versus what is too short. The general rule of thumb is using the 3 finger rule. When determining your bottoms wear, the wrong choice to make is choosing something too revealing. While all public courses are subject to their own set of rules, the general length requirement follows a guideline of if the lady golfer puts three fingers above her knee, the hem should not be any higher. Having your clothing fall down a good 2-3 inches above the knee is the sweet spot. Yes, public courses are still more relaxed than private, however they still require that respectable length. 

Difference between Muni’s and Public courses:

There can be a common misconception on the differences of dress codes when comparing Municipal and Public courses. Here are some of the main takeaway differences as a first time lady golfer:

• Is denim appropriate for public golf courses? No. Denim is generally forbidden when looking at public courses that stress the neat, traditional golf appearance. This is also to say that denim at municipal courses is allowed. 
• Can women wear leggings golfing? Municipal courses will allow comfortable wear such as leggings and yoga pants. Comfort is a focus here, whereas with Public courses it is a bit more formal. Public courses will enforce different rules so it is important to check in with them to ensure compliance. 
• Are collars required for public courses? Typically, yes. These are the standard for polished play, even wearing sleeveless it is suggested to have a collar. Rules are not as strict when it comes to Municipal courses.

Golf Dress Code for Women -  Private Golf Clubs

Finally, we are on to the Private Golf Clubs. This can be the most intimidating type of club as they tend to have the strictest women’s golf dress codes. Again, all rules and regulations vary from club to club so it's important to check in with your private club to understand their course specific dress code policies. 

At private clubs, women's golf clothes rules tend to include all apparel should be of a certain length as well as predominantly collared, or the newer trend: collarless/mock collared golf shirts. Dresses are a great option here as they tend to be safe anywhere and are all in one piece. Having to stress less about what item goes with what is a good thing!

Understanding what to avoid is just as important. When you think private golf clubs, think conservative. That is the key word when determining if your attire adheres to the dress code. It can get a little complex, but a few items are forbidden and that is tanktops, spaghetti straps, t-shirts, crop-tops and low-cut tops. 

Determining low-cut tops is simple: once again ask yourself “is this the conservative option?” Private courses like the professional, modest look–when choosing your attire limit skin exposure. 

Are leggings discouraged for private golf courses?

Leggings for private golf courses are strictly prohibited. It’s important to understand there is a certain level of class these courses like to stick to, avoiding leggings will keep you in line. Casual wear like leggings are against the dress code guidelines of exclusive courses.

Frequently Asked Questions About Women’s Golf  Dress Code and Women's Golf Clothes Etiquette 

What is the dress code for the LPGA women? LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) women do have a women’s golf dress code but it is less strict than one might think. They allow sleeveless and collarless shirts and there are no specific length requirements on shorts or skirts.  Denim and workout clothes are not allowed.  

Can female golfers wear pants? Yes!  Female golfers can wear pants and it is one of the most common pieces of clothing found on the course.  Some advice - no cargo pockets or super tight fitting pants. This would mean leggings are not accepted at more prestigious clubs, however are deemed acceptable with municipal and some public courses with a call. 

Can you wear running shoes for golf? It is usually fine to wear running shoes for golf. Sometimes the fancier private clubs require golf shoes, but that is becoming a thing of the past.  

Can women wear collarless shirts? Collarless shirts are generally acceptable women’s golf clothing in most clubs.  This may be a time to check first, but even if collars are required for men, women can usually get away with a mock collar or no collar at all.  Sleeveless is usually fine as well.
